Extracts from Recent Articles

"David Mendelsohn is modern photography’s John Henry, locked in a battle to keep image processing from completely dominating the creative process of taking a picture. Amidst his fight to keep it real, he explains the art of getting the shot in preproduction."

His work is a master’s composition of vivid color, finely proportioned space, surrealist sculpture and outlandish humor—plus everything in between. Master photographer David Mendelsohn has fine-tempered a commercial and fine-art career without ever betraying a dedication to his own sensibilities. Mendelsohn’s style is a kind of surrealist minimalism and, as you can readily see from his work, the real problem with trying to define him is that it’s hard to find only one way to sum him up. After all, there’s Mendelsohn’s mantra: “There is nothing quite so complicated as simplicity.”

By keeping the elements of his compositions simple, plainly evident in his commissioned work, Mendelsohn is able to turn basic everyday subjects into complex statements. Colors and patterns come together in a bright landscape of primary hues. Human legs and pink Cadillacs and saturated skies juxtapose against each other in presentations that somehow end up inspiring a level of visual complexity that just shouldn’t be that deep.

"Mendelsohn’s mastery of elements, of the distinct relationships between mood, lighting and color, leads to images where everything that’s seen, and unseen, becomes equally as important. And the conscious choices he has made may turn out to be an expression of the unconscious collective, proving that sometimes the most complex problems require the simplest solutions."

Creative Journeys

Simplicity is Complex

“I think that the simplest images are the most powerful. I just enjoy making the process fairly easy. I gravitate toward the crisp and clean, and I tend to redecorate the world with a minimalist’s compulsion. I subtract rather than add, and that tendency has definitely been carried over to my workflow.”

“I tend to work in abstractions,” explains Mendelsohn, “things stolen from the larger world and then condensed to a point where it’s easily digested. All unnecessary or distracting data is eliminated, which I’ll achieve through perspective, in-camera cropping or even pruning sheers— whatever it takes without destroying someone’s property or being arrested. And for me, this is as simple and efficient as a conceived shot can get. “

“Minimalism, surrealism and even cannibalism—all have been used to describe my work,” says Mendelsohn. “In a sense, I work in abstractions, condensing a fairly complex world into small, digestible portions.”

Unexpected Encounters in New England - A Journey into Creativity

Join expert photographer, artist and Nikon "Legend behind the Lens", David Mendelsohn as he takes you on a Life Changing Journey through the beautifull New England countryside for 5 or 7 days.

You will have an extraordinary opportunity to share and learn the "creative process" of one of America's top photographer's whose work has been featured in most of the top professional photography magazines in the world.

"Any art form is a journey of self-discovery, and to discount anything is to deny the imagination. " he says, and this is the starting point of an extraordinary trip.

During your time with David you will learn how to "see differently" and to do this you have to be ready to seize opportunities on the way.

The itinerary includes Boston Freedom Trail, Fenway Park (not during a game), dinner at Legal Seafood, drinks at Cheers, a Lighthouse Shoot, covered bridges, a visit to the LL Bean shop and more. However, if something interesting comes up en route, you might make a change.

Creativity goes a long way but the secret to great shots is in the set up and David will teach you how to build great photos and control the shot with the objects, people and places you find around you and a little help from some of his favorite friends like flashlights, tape and the simplest of tools and props found along the way.

You begin and end in Boston. Accommodations will be reserved in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine at 3 or 4 star bed and breakfasts depending on availability and client preference.
