Alt Emporda Wine Tour

Wine from the Empoada

Bounded by the dazzling Pyrenees mountains and France in the north, and the Mediterranean on the eastern side, Empordà-Costa Brava with its double barrelled name, has many attractions.

The close proximity to France has had considerable impact on the wine style of the past and present. While Garnacha and Carineña have been the heart of red wine production, most new plantings are of the French varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, for red wine and, sensibly, Chardonnay and Chenin for white wine. As this is very much cava (sparkling wine) country, the three local Catalan white grapes (Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel.lo) are in most vineyards. Tempranillo is also meeting with considerable success.

Althouth soils and the Mediterranean climate are amenable, the winds of this Empordà - Costa Brava region are notorious for reaching speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour! This hazard requires careful management in the vineyards and even more careful selection of vineyard sites. Most of the wines produced come from the relatively low plains country which sweep to the sea.

Morning visit to the Dalí Theatre Museum of Figueres which contains a broad spectrum of workscovering the artistic career of Salvador Dalí (1904 – 1989), from his early artistic experiences and his creations within the sphere of surrealism through to works dating from the last years of his life. Some of the most outstanding works on exhibition are Port Alguer (1924), The Spectrum of Sex Appeal(1932), Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon (1941), Poetry from America (1943), Galarina (1944-45), The Bread Basket (1945) and Galatea of the Spheres (1952). Also worth highlighting are the works made especiallyfor the Theatre-Museum: the Mae West room and the Rainy Cadillac.4

After lunch visit to small cellar located in the Alt Emporda, protected by the mountain range of the Albera, where the Pyrenees meet with the Mediterranean sea. The cellar is located in a five century old farmhouse. The vineyards are in a terrain dominated by granite and slate, which are very adequate for the production of quality grapes. The climate of the zone is one of the factors that highly affect the quality of our production; the characteristic dry wind from the north, the Tramontana, that blows most of the year, is often very strong. This local phenomenon limits the production by plant and diminishes the incidence of the mainfungicide diseases, very decisive factors for a good quality of harvest. The tramontana wind takes an important part in the elaboration of our more singular product, the Raisin Wine. At present, the winery works with seven varieties of grapes, four native (the Carignan and the white, red and black Grenaches) and three foreign (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah).
