Wine Tours & Tastings

Wine Regions

About the Penedes wine making region - For thousands of years, the Earth of the Penedes has been associate to the conreo of the vine and the wine elaboration. To know the Penedes is also to know a landscape and people that, generation after generation, have made of the vine their main economic motor, social and cultural.

Alt Emporda

Bounded by the dazzling Pyrenees mountains and France in the north, and the Mediterranean on the eastern side, Emporda-Costa Brava with its double barrelled name, has many attractions.

The close proximity to France has had considerable impact on the wine style of the past and present. While Garnacha and Carinena have been the heart of red wine production, most new plantings are of the French varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, for red wine and, sensibly, Chardonnay and Chenin for white wine. As this is very much cava (sparkling wine) country, the three local Catalan white grapes (Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel.lo) are in most vineyards. Tempranillo is also meeting with considerable success.

Althouth soils and the Mediterranean climate are amenable, the winds of this Emporda - Costa Brava region are notorious for reaching speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour! This hazard requires careful management in the vineyards and even more careful selection of vineyard sites. Most of the wines produced come from the relatively low plains country which sweep to the sea.
