Food & Tapas Tours

Spanish Food

The Mediterranean cuisine has acquired, in recent years, international renown to an unprecedented extent. Many of our chefs have gained international acclaim and our culinary tradition is famous all over the world for its richness and variety. Besides that, our Mediterranean diet is considered to be especially healthy.

Furthermore, this well-deserved reputation of the Spanish gastronomy shared either by professionals or people who just enjoy the art of good eating - is in line with a rising tendency to regard cuisine as a distinctive element of culture. People traveling abroad are increasingly taking interest in gastronomy, since they understand it is an identity sign of the country's culture.

The Origin of Tapas

According to The Joy of Cooking, the original tapas were the slices of bread which sherry drinkers in Andalusian taverns used to cover their glasses between sips. This was a practical measure meant to prevent fruit flies from hovering over the sweet sherry. But soon, enterprising bartenders were putting small snacks on the bread, and the lowly tapa (from tapa derived the verb tapar, "to cover") became as important as the sherry.

Tapas evolved over Spain's history through the incorporation of ingredients and influences from many different cultures and countries. The east coast was invaded by the Romans, who introduced the olive. The invasion of the North African Moors in the 8th century also brought olives to the south, as well as almonds, citrus fruits and fragrant spices. The influence of their 700-year presence remains today, especially in Andalusia. The discovery of the New World brought the introduction of tomatoes, sweet and chili peppers, maize (corn), beans and potatoes.

The tour begins at La Boqueria, in the heart of La Rambla, is one of Barcelona's most interesting markets and the most visited market of Europe. It is a place where you can enjoy a lively, vibrant atmosphere in surroundings where the cries of the stallholders and the daily bustle intermingle. It is arguably one of the best places to get to know the character of the people of Barcelona, where making a purchase is not just a mere financial transaction but goes much further in the sphere of human relations.

We'll hop from tapas bar to tapas bar in the Old Town, discovering specialties from different regions of Spain (Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia...) and different types of venues (from dusty taberns to trendy creative tapas bars). A unique way to experience the city like a local!

The average cost is 3 to 10 euro / person at each stop, depending on the chosen tapas and the drinks as well as the number of people (as tapas are dishes to share, it's less expensive going for tapas in group than in couple). This price is calculated for 2-3 tapas per bar + 1 drink. We reccomend to have at least 4-5 different stops per tour.

Please remember to include the tourguide's expenses.

NOTE: the tapas bars at the Boqueria market can only be included during daytime from Monday to Saturday

A food and wine specialized guide will lead you on a walk through the old town, Petrixol, via the historic cathedral, Picasso’s Museum (visit included) and Santa Maria del Mar.

En route we will stop to enjoy :

7 tapas, hot and cold, accompanied by wines: red, white, Txacolí (typical Basque white wine), sidra (cider wine) and visit Barcelona's typical grocer's shops, known as “colmados”.

A memorable and completely different way to enjoy the food of Barcelona.
