Secret Gardens

Explore some of the hidden gardens of the city and learn the history that brought the locals to build gardens in such a difficult environment. Gardens in Venice come as a surprise and although many palaces own their private small garden, your impression while walking around is that of a city of stone. Gardens played an important role, both functional and social, in times gone by and these aspects will be discussed during the tour. Our guides belong to the Venetian garden association and are experts on the history of Venetian gardens. In our regular tour we include the visit to three gardens, two belonging to convents and one belonging to a secluded palace, which garden is a beautiful example of a renaissance Venetian garden as featured in the Secret Gardens of Venice Book.

The Jewish Quarter in Cannaregio

On the Cannaregio & Jewish Ghetto Walking Tour discover the lively and vibrant atmosphere of the most residential part of the city, where the few Venetians left in town still live! Enjoy a pleasant stroll off-the-beaten track through the non-tourist district of Cannaregio. You'll quickly discover that literally the whole of Venice is one giant open-air museum as you encounter imposing Palaces, important churches, enchanting canals and bridges as you make your way through a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways to the Jewish Ghetto that lies in the heart of the Cannaregio district of Venice. The walking tour through the Cannaregio district includes many detours to encounter homes of famous Venetians like Tintoretto & Titian, delightful anecdotes & stories of past residents of this picturesque area of Venice, along with sweeping views of the northern lagoon where we'll be able to discuss the vital role that the Lagoon played in the history of a city built from fear. After a fascinating walking tour through the Cannaregio district, we'll spend the second part of the tour exploring the famous "Jewish Ghetto". A city within a city, and you'll learn how the Jewish community lived here over the centuries. And what role they played in the history of Venice.

19th Century Venice

In the 18th C British artists snubbed Venice and flocked instead to Rome, Florence, Pompei to study classical ruins and draw Arcadian landscapes. Architects visited the city to study the Palladian buildings rather than admire its Byzantine and Gothic monuments. "The Church of S. Marco surprises you more by its extreme ugliness than by anything else. The Ducal Palace is even more ugly than anything I have previously mentioned", the architect Joseph Woods recorded. A lovely walk and an unusual visit of the city as seen by its 19th century opinionated visitors.

Maritime Venice

As a great maritime power, Venice was an international emporium that brought together a host of ethnic groups and cultures. Many left their mark in the city. The Orthodox Church of San Giorgio dei Greci, the Scuola Dalmata di San Giorgio Degli Schiavoni and the Naval Museum. We start our tour with a little corner of Greece, visiting the oldest Greek Orthodox Church in the West. We continue to the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, site of the Dalmatian community, a small gem decorated with canvasses by Carpaccio. A walk down the city's narrowest streets brings us to the entrance of the Arsenale, the State shipyard where galleys, the pride of the Venetian fleet, were built and fitted out. Nearby is the Naval Museum: here you can find maps and naval paraphernalia, gondolas and a model of the Bucintoro, the Doge's sumptuous vessel that was destroyed by Napoleon. The Naval Museum is only open in the mornings. It is also closed on Sundays and Bank Holiday.
