Customer Reviews

Thanks larry for organizing the wine promenade. We had a great time and tried out our very dodgy french!! It was good to see some great old cafes and get an insight into the french wine psyche. We'll be back in Venice next summer and look forward to using your web site again.

This is what we aim for Larry..Good job... Thank you - US travel agent

Venice

St Marks

Venice is world-famous for its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which the city is built are connected by about 400 bridges. In the old center, the canals serve the function of roads, and every form of transport is on water or on foot. In the 19th century a causeway to the mainland brought a railway station to Venice, and an automobile causeway and parking lot was added in the 20th century. Beyond these land entrances at the northern edge of the city, transportation within the city remains, as it was in centuries past, entirely on water or on foot.

Venice is Europe's largest urban car free area, unique in Europe in remaining a sizable functioning city in the 21st century entirely without motorcars or trucks.

Veneto is one of the twenty Regions of Italy. It is located in the northeastern part of the country, bordering on the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy, the autonomic regions of Trentino-South Tyrol and Friuli Venezia Giulia and the republic of Austria. It lies between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea and is traversed by the rivers of Po, Adige, Brenta and Piave.

The capital is Venice. Other important towns include Verona, Padua, Treviso, Belluno, Rovigo and Vicenza.

This region is very rich in cultural and historic treasures. Its architectural heritage includes the unique buildings and bridges of Venice, and many of Palladio's villas. Verona's arena is an ancient Roman amphitheatre, traditionally reserved for opera. The thermal baths at Abano Terme are also an attraction. Although the most famous, Abano is by no means the only thermal town in the area. It is however one of the prettiest and most tranquil. The university of Padua is one of the oldest in Europe and has counted among its many famous professors Galileo Galilei. To this day it is world renound for being at the forefront of medicine.

There are some fine wines from the Veneto region of Italy, these include: Soave, Prosecco and Valpolicella. Asiago, the origin of Asiago cheese is also here.

In the Halls of Power

More Details

The Frari Church
Venetian churches are so full of works of art that they are like museums. Who paid for it all? And why? In a republic in which individual glory was strictly subordinate to that of the State, the commission of art works became a way of celebrating and enhancing social prestige. Noble and wealthy families as well as small confraternities of citizens of a more modest social standing commissioned the altarpieces in the Venetian churches in the hope of assuring a place in Heaven.

Hidden Museums in Florence
In the 1700s Ca’ Rezzonico was without doubt one of the most sumptuous palaces in the city. The owners were one of the most influential families of patrician Venice, and could boast a pope among their members. In 1769 the Republic chose this home for the reception given in hon our of Joseph II and many other official feasts took place there before the fall of the Republic. Later the palace hosted illustrious foreigners, including the English poet Robert Browning.

Doge’s Palace
The picturesque oriental walls of the Doge’s Palace enclose two very different and contrasting aspects of the same political organisations: its magnificent public face with sumptuous halls of power, elegantly decorated with masterpieces by some of the greatest artists of Venetian painting, where foreign princes and ambassadors were welcomed on occasion, and alongside a parallel and scheming world, often hidden behind wooden panels, housing narrow offices, sinister prisons and the notorious torture chamber.
