Veneto
- Home to Marco Polo
|
| Venice is world-famous for
its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 118 islands
formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands
on which the city is built are connected by about 400 bridges.
In the old center, the canals serve the function of roads,
and every form of transport is on water or on foot. In the
19th century a causeway to the mainland brought a railway
station to Venice, and an automobile causeway and parking
lot was added in the 20th century. Beyond these land entrances
at the northern edge of the city, transportation within
the city remains, as it was in centuries past, entirely
on water or on foot.
Venice is Europe's largest urban carfree area, unique in
Europe in remaining a sizable functioning city in the 21st
century entirely without motorcars or trucks.

Veneto

|
| Vèneto is one of the
twenty Regions of Italy. It is located in the northeastern
part of the country, bordering on the Italian regions of
Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy, the autonomic regions of Trentino-South
Tyrol and Friuli Venezia Giulia and the republic of Austria.
It lies between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea and is traversed
by the rivers of Po, Adige, Brenta and Piave.
The capital is Venice. Other important towns include Verona,
Padua, Treviso, Belluno, Rovigo and Vicenza.
This region is very rich in cultural and historic treasures.
Its architectural heritage includes the unique buildings
and bridges of Venice, and many of Palladio's villas. Verona's
arena is an ancient Roman amphitheatre, traditionally reserved
for opera. The thermal baths at Abano Terme are also an
attraction. Although the most famous, Abano is by no means
the only thermal town in the area. It is however one of
the prettiest and most tranquil. The university of Padua
is one of the oldest in Europe and has counted among its
many famous professors Galileo Galilei. To this day it is
world renound for being at the forefront of medicine.
There are some fine wines from the Veneto region of Italy,
these include: Soave, Prosecco and Valpolicella. Asiago,
the origin of Asiago cheese is also here.
Vacation spots are Jesolo, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Lake Garda.
The regional economy, which used to depend entirely on
agriculture, is now highly oriented towards manufacturing
industry and fashion (Benetton and Marzotto were a major
employer), together with cultural tourism.
Veneto is one of the two Italian Regions whose inhabitants
are granted the status of «popolo» (i.e. people)
with Constitutional Law by the Italian Parliament.

Chianti sub-zones, yet it is one of most genuine and picturesque.
The Chianti Rufina has one of the oldest histories in all

of Tuscany Cosimo III in 1716. The Rufina lies in the heart
of the Val Di Sieve, in the foothills of the Apennine mountains.
